Spotlight on Michigan Philharmonic

Representing Michigan:
Michigan Philharmonic

Hearts and Minds

THE STORY:

For 76 years the history and mission of the Michigan Philharmonic has been focused on being innovative musically, while educating students of all ages and engaging audience throughout southeast Michigan. When it comes to music, under the longtime leadership of Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn, the Michigan Philharmonic has been on the cutting edge of showcasing women composers, contemporary composers and other underrepresented composers who don’t often make the marquee, featuring music and artists from around the globe as well as American performers and standards through our “pops” programs. Our history is one of offering cultural service to the community, giving back as we share our passion for music with all ages through extraordinary concerts to what we call our “adventurous audiences.”

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

How do you measure your impact over 75 years? For the Michigan Philharmonic, that’s easy because we continue to:
 Build a history of joyous service to our community,
 Share a passion for music through curated concerts for adventurous audiences,
 Showcase a wide range of women, contemporary and other underrepresented composers,
 Blend musical inclusion with innovative programming,
 Highlight a broad spectrum of cultural outlooks,
 Make our orchestra accessible to everyone who loves music
 And develop a deep bond with future musicians through our youth education programs
